Bleeding Patient. Can Your ACT Machine HELP

Country's first government Liver Clinic brings hope

Chethana (name changed), 10, had a virtual rebirth on Friday when she underwent a bile duct enlargement correction surgery at the newly-launched Liver Clinic here. The nation's first government-owned liver clinic offers a glimmer of hope for thousands of chronic liver disorder patients. The north Karnataka girl was among six persons who underwent surgeries at a surgical gastroenterology workshop. The operations, which were done at the Victoria Hospital premises, were beamed live to the inauguration venue. The Liver Clinic, run by the department of gastroenterology, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), offers to conduct liver transplants on poor patients for Rs 5 lakh as against Rs 40 lakh charged by corporate hospitals. The state government has sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for the clinic. As many as 150 patients with various liver disorders have been awaiting transplant and have registered with the Zonal Coordination Committee for Organ Tran...

Dhruvika, the youngest Indian to undergo liver transplant

Brave Dhruvika has finally won the battle against deadly Citrullinemia with the help of his grandmother. Dhruvika was diagnosed with Citrullinemia just after her birth. Now she has been gifted a new life with a liver transplant, the liver was donated by her grandmother. Now Dhruvika has become the youngest in the country to fight Citrullinemia with a liver transplant. Citrullinemia is an autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder that causes ammonia and other toxic substances to accumulate in the blood. Since the substances also accumulate in the urine, the disorder can also be called citrullinuria. It is  a life-threatening disease in which the proteins do not get broken because of the deficiency of an enzyme. In such circumstances, the levels of ammonia become very high. Ammonia is one product that can cross the blood brain barrier, causing the brain cells to swell up and leading to other grave problems too. Dhruvika was born on February 8, 2013 at Cloud Nine Hospital in B...

Minor undergoes rare liver transplant

In a rare case, a 10-year-old boy suffering from liver failure got a fresh lease of life after doctors innovatively transplanted a portion of his mother's liver into him. This was not a standard transplant as the mother was found to be unfit for donation due to an aberrant anomaly in her hepatic vein. But with the boy's liver condition deteriorating rapidly, an urgent liver transplant was advised to increase his chances of survival. Incidentally, only the mother's blood group matched with the patient's group. With no options left, the surgeons at Global Hospital came up with innovative means of both extracting the liver from the donor and also implanting into the recipient with minimum risk. "The mother's left portion of the liver was implanted into the child and the right hepatic vein of the child was used to reconstruct the middle vein," said Dr Thomas Cherian, liver transplant surgeon of the hospital, who performed the surgery. Both the mother...

Sonoclot Analyzer and Platelet Aggregometry Detect Platelet Receptor (GPIIb/IIIa) Blockade Yue Dong, M.D.; Gregory A. Nuttall, M.D.; William C. Oliver, M.D.; Mark H. Ereth, M.D. Anesthesiology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States [Background] Abciximab blocks the major platelet surface receptor (GPIIb/IIIa), which is critical to platelet aggregation. Practical means to monitor platelet function in patients on abciximab undergoing emergency cardiac surgery is needed. [Methods] After Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent, blood samples were drawn from 20 healthy volunteers. Celite activated Sonoclot analysis and ADP activated Platelet Poor Plasma (PRP) aggregometry were completed after addition of abciximab. The Sonoclot analysis and ADP activated PRP aggregometry were used to detect platelet function. The data was analyzed by student's t test and P<0.05 is statistically significan...

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) | Sonoclot Analyzer India | Thromboelastography | TEG

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) The DIC process can be divided into three stages: • Hypercoagulable (Stage I) • Secondary fibrinolytic (Stage II) • Hypocoagulable (Stage III) Hypercoagulable (Stage I) DIC is commonly initiated through release of tissue factor (TF) and FVIIa activation of the extrinsic pathway, resulting in a deposition of thrombin in the microcirculation system. TF is normally contained within the cellular membrane and encrypted. However, traumatic tissue injury, required major resuscitation, or major surgery, exposes TF to the bloodstream. TF expression can also occur when monocytes are activated by sepsis, endotoxin, the presence of cancerous cells, or in pregnancy when amniotic fluid penetrates the maternal blood stream. In summary, the release of TF, together with FVIIa, initiates the extrinsic coagulation cascade and, if it is not anticoagulated accordingly, with heparin low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), or activated protein C ...

ACT Machine India | ACT Machine Cardiac, ICU | Activate Clotting Time Machine | Sonoclot India

Sonoclot SC1 Analyzer calculates onset of ACT and Clot Rate for in vitro coagulation studies by monitoring mechanical changes that occur to blood samples during hemostasis. The mechanism is a tubular probe that moves up and down within a blood sample. This produces a series of electronic signals that are processed by a microcomputer. Sonoclot SC1 incorporates Sienco's patented whole blood viscoelastic clot detection mechanism. It provides effective clinical hemostasis management for operating rooms, coagulation labs, STAT labs, and intensive care units. For More Details please follow: http://www.lifediagnostica.com/
